Leaving Athens, we head south to the coastal town of Lavrio. Our first stop takes us to the archaeological site of Thorikos where you will have the rare chance to see the oldest surviving theatre in the world.

We take a small walk and a coffee/soft drink by the sea in the centre of Lavrio. Steeped in nostalgic aura, with 19th century buildings, industries and palm-dotted streets, Lavrio has a charm of its own.

We then set off on our adventure at the ancient silver mines, up on the hills of Lavrio. We will discover the fascinating history and geology of this land through quick stops at selected sites: the Mineral Museum, mining galleries, wells, deserted miners’ habitations and an impressive, crater-like chasm named Chaos.

We have saved for last the greatest gem of our excursion, the majestic temple of Poseidon at Cape Sounio. Built with marble from Lavrio, this 5th century BC temple is a landmark of the Golden Age of Athens. The view of the Aegean Sea from here is stunning!

If you wish, we can savour a meal of Greek delicacies by the sea, with a view at the temple, before taking our way back to Athens along the picturesque coastline of the Athens Riviera.
