Starting from Athens, we follow by car the Classic Marathon Course all the way to Marathon. This course was first run at the end of the legendary Battle of Marathon, to announce the victory of Athenians.
We will relive the events and discover the topography and strategy of the Battle through a visit at the major sites of the area: the battlefields; the Tumulus of the Greek soldiers killed; the Trophy of the Battle; the Marathon Archaeological Museum.
Along the way, you will be able to discover well-hidden archaeological gems from Marathon’s long history, such as a prehistoric cemetery with impressive burial formations dating from 3000 BC; or the mysterious Sanctuary of Egyptian Gods built in the middle of a marsh.
After this full tour, we deserve a nice, relaxing stop at the beautiful sandy beach of Schinias, against the backdrop of a lush pine forest. We can enjoy the beach, have lunch at a tavern by the sea or swim, according to your wish.
On our way back to Athens, you will have the chance to admire and cross the majestic marble-coated Marathon Dam which forms a peaceful, verdant lake. A romantic picture-postcard view, the jewel in the crown of Marathon.
