Starting our walk at the foothills of the Acropolis, we first visit Plaka, Athens old town. A mix of neoclassical masterpieces, ancient monuments, byzantine churches and Cycladic little houses, Plaka is Athens’ most picturesque neighborhood.
Following the narrow alleys, we reach Monastiraki, Athens’ commercial hub since centuries. Traditional food and flea markets and old shops give this neighborhood a particular charm.
Next stop: Exarchia. Built around the historic Polytechnic School and hosting a student population, open to new and alternative ideas, the area of Exarchia has the best examples of modernist architecture in Athens.
Moving towards the central Syntagma square, you can admire the monumental facet of Athens. Opulent, neoclassical, 19th century public buildings and mansions built around the Parliament represent the re-birth of the Greek nation and Athens after Independence.
Closing a fascinating circle, our path takes us back to our starting point at the Acropolis station.
